I rate Lost and Love: Thailand by Stella Knights 3 out of 4 stars because it was well-written with minimal errors. I could not agree on a 4 star rating because I thought more could have been put into the character of Johnny. This is great exploration of relationships and marriages, and how things can change – for better or worse. This will appeal to anyone looking for romance and adventure. This might not appeal to someone who is bothered by infidelity in marriage and detailed sexual exploits.
Savannah is used to being organized, and anything unexpected stresses her out. She has a mundane job that she doesn’t really like and does not think she is very good at. Her husband Johnny is pretty predictable and unexciting. After seeing a poster at work, Savannah talks Johnny into going on a vacation to spice things up a bit in their marriage. Savannah goes out with her best friend, Pam, to buy some things in an adult shop to help make some memories in Thailand. When they arrive, Savannah finds that Johnny is getting into the spirit when he rents a villa with a pool that will allow them to go skinny-dipping. Advice from Pam has her analyzing everything they do on their trip, because “as long as you have passion, then everything will be okay.”
What I liked best about the book was how Savannah and Johnny were both willing to try new things and be honest with each other about them. You might be surprised about what your spouse or significant other does not tell you. Couples often have communication barriers and difficulty speaking up for themselves in a relationship. To have fun on vacation, they tried going to different bars, diving, snorkeling, and talking about sexual fantasies. They played out some of what they talked about, and eventually agreed to include someone else. It seemed like everything was working out as planned, but then it wasn’t.
Johnny insists he has to return home for an emergency at work. He gave Savannah an option to remain behind and finish out their vacation, but she is a good wife and comes home with him. She is ready to step back into their routine from before their trip, but he seems angry all the time. The more she tries to connect with him, the further away he pushes her. Then he tells her he does not love her anymore, moves out, and sells their house! She feels like the marriage was failing even before the vacation, and that Johnny always put her needs second to everything else in his life.
What I did not really like was how Johnny changed. I suppose it could just be that some dreams are not meant to come true. He couldn’t handle it and took it out on Savannah. I feel like there is more to it than that. Something was missing from his back story to explain his total about-face. I would also like to know more about Savannah’s parents and their relationship to better understand what her expectations were in a marriage. Just when you are starting to understand her, she leaves you hanging at the end!
