Returning home to Earth after years in space, sounds great! Getting woken up six months early from cryo-sleep to a ship that is on fire? Not so much. Yet in Scott Baron's book Daisy's Run, this is precisely what happens to the crew of the Váli. After space debris hits the ship, the on-board AI and cyborg awaken the crew to affect repairs. At first it seems pretty standard, but as time goes on Daisy begins noticing things that are just a little off. Parts of the ship don't quite match up, strange writing on the walls in the bowels of the ship, and the AI system, Mal, starts behaving just a little strangely. When more and more things begin to go wrong with the Váli, Daisy must decide who she trusts, or if she can trust anyone at all.
Daisy's Run is the first book in the Scott Baron's The Clockwork Chimera series. It is a fun space adventure filled with AI, cyborgs, and plenty of twists and turns that keeps you guessing all the way through the book. The book had lots of fun pop culture references and kept the "tech talk" at a very understandable level. The author goes into enough technical detail that the world feels plausible and easy to accept, yet doesn't detract from the story with too many overly complicated explanations. I especially enjoyed the strong female lead, and the snappy dialogue. It ends with a cliffhanger, what else would it end with? But despite that Baron manages to resolve enough questions that you feel excited for the next book and not cheated for answers to the questions raised in the first.
This book does contain profanity and some mild sex scenes, which I would rate at about a 2 on a scale of 1 to 10. There is also fight scenes, peril and even death. The descriptions are well thought out and nicely written. You could follow not only the growth of Daisy, but even those of the supporting characters. I did find myself wanting a map or diagram of the ship to follow along with, but Baron's descriptions kept you fairly orientated as to where the action was and where the characters were most of the time.
This is a great science fiction book that I believe will appeal to all those fans out there. I would not recommend it for young adult readers because of the profanity and mild sex. But if you are a fan of this genre it ticks all the boxes. Space, cyborgs, AI, aliens, and lots of super cool gadgets! Even those not as savvy in the technological side of things will find this book a fun read and easy to follow.
I didn't find anything I strongly disliked about this book and it was well edited and proofread, so I am giving this book a 4 out of 4 stars. I hope that Scott Baron can keep the momentum going with the rest of the books in this series. He is off to a promising start!
