Burn Zones: Playing Life’s Bad Hands is a motivational autobiography that tells a nerve-wracking tale of Jorge as he challenges his life’s most difficult situations.” According to Jorge, “burn zones” in cycling are relatively short periods of extreme efforts that separate winners and losers. In the story, Jorge describes his life’s extreme difficulties that make him want to give up on everything as his “burn zones”.

Jorge started his business career at the early age of seven years as a newspaper delivery boy. It was interesting how a seven-year-old boy had the zeal to work. Though he faced challenges on the rainy days he never gave up and worked with indefatigable energy doubling his delivery task in the process. I was even more impressed when he managed to save enough money to buy an ice cream trike at the age of eleven. It wasn’t a surprise when he finally quit school to explore real-life challenges. Being born into a strict household, I must say I envy Jorge’s parents, they were everything that I dreamt of as a child, supportive loving and very understanding. I think that was one of the reasons why he was not afraid to push forward with his ideas.

My favorite interaction between Jorge (‘Jorgie’ as his dad preferred to call him) and his dad remains the scene in the first chapter where Jorge experienced his first police riot. It was one of those nights where the seventeen-year-old had rented his stage out for a show, all would have turned out well if the police had not incited public violence amongst the fans. Being new to the whole situation, Jorge decided to take a rest on a bus bench on some side street. Miraculously, his dad showed up in his car right in front of him. When Jorge narrated the incident to his dad, I expected him to shove Jorge into his car in anger and send him home but instead, he had a nice conversation with him and left Jorge at the site because he wanted to stay behind and pack his stuff.

I found myself cheering Jorge on in every step he took. To be honest, he was the most interesting real-life character that I’ve ever read about. His life, in my opinion, can be described as a roller coaster ride, it wasn’t all smooth for him even though he started his career as a child, he had his share of highs and lows. I liked his hardworking spirit and perseverance, he was not afraid to take on difficult challenges and never let his shortcomings cripple him. Reading Jorge’s story made me feel like I can do anything once I set my mind to it and I’m sure anyone who picks up this book will not finish reading without feeling motivated to pursue greater heights in every aspect of his life.

After thoroughly reading the book three times, I did not spot any grammatical errors in the story hence can boldly say it was well-edited.In short, there was nothing to dislike about this book, I enjoyed every second I spent reading and I’m sure I would go back to it anytime I feel down and need some uplifting.

Having been inspired immensely by Jorge P. Newberry’s autobiography, undoubtedly, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars and recommend this book to all book lovers especially readers who enjoy inspirational stories.

The book is a simple narrative of the author’s life and his experience, rather than a preachy “how-to guide” to instant success. Loved reading it. I really enjoyed your review. 🙂
