As the title says, Health Tips, Myths and Tricks – A Physician’s Advice by Morton E. Tavel, is a book that is divided into three sections namely health tips, myths and tricks. Tips section is about what people should and should not do in order to promote their health and wellness and to create a healthier and longer physical outlook. It includes some advice on better ways of losing weight, which food to go for or avoid and also benefits of drinking coffee and green tea, of good sleep and regular exercises. This section constitutes almost half of the book.

Myths are common beliefs or misconceptions which people have had for a long time. Such beliefs include what vaccination can do to human health, genetically modified organisms (GMO) and the environment and benefits of organically grown foods. I must confess that I had some reservations on the growing of GMO crops but favored organically grown crops. But research, according to the book, is proving that these myths are what they are, myths, nothing else. The tricks section is about strategies some companies are employing, in order to sell their products. The strategies involve deliberate misinformation designed to entice people to buy their products while the companies know their products are useless or dangerous.

Health Tips, Myths and Tricks is a book based on findings from researches conducted by the author as well as by other scientists. It contains information that, if followed, can help the readers enjoy good health. Its chapters are short but packed with facts, making it easier and enjoyable to read. It contains practical information that anyone can apply in their daily living. Topics are selected in such a way that readers can choose what to read, if they want to, or, read the whole book. I suggest that readers should read the whole book first then choose chapters relevant and applicable to them for maximum absorption of the contents.

Non-communicable diseases such as high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and all types of cancer, are some of the major killer diseases in the modern days. Some of these are in the category of lifestyle diseases. MedicineNet.com defines lifestyle disease as a disease associated with the way a person or a group of people lives. Morton Tavel is a seasoned medical doctor who is well versed in the medical world and he has written this book to help people prevent or mitigate the effects of lifestyle and common diseases by changing their beliefs, lifestyles and eating habits.

The book will also help people save money. A good example is on obesity and associated effects, which is fast becoming a big problem in so many societies. Some physicians do recommend dietary supplements as a way of losing weight. Some of the supplements, according to the author, just increase the brain’s sensation of stomach fullness. These supplements have negative side effects which also negate this method of weight loss. The author offers better ways of weight loss without spending extra money.

The book contains some contradiction of some kind in which in one chapter the author advises readers to avoid some species of fish because they contain substantial amounts of mercury which is harmful. In another chapter he recommends the same fish as a good source potassium. I found this to be a bit confusing.

The book is well planned and written but it needs a bit of re-editing. A few typographical errors are noticeable as one reads the book. Pages 48, 123 and 124 were left in track changes. However, the book is well researched and contains health information so helpful that I still give it a 4 out of 4 stars rating. I recommend this book for anyone who is serious with their health. Upcoming medical personnel will find this book particularly helpful.
