The book A Loaf of Bread is written by Rana Bitar. Rana is a physician who works and lives in New York.
This is not your typical feel good poetry about love or nature. Rana writes about the reality of war and it's destruction. She starts off with happy little girl memories. Makeshift dolls, a worn out bike, smelling coffee and flying on the magic carpet of Aladdin.
Then she brings to life the destruction of war. Bombs destroying homes and being in fear. The loss of family members. The reality of how young men are forced to be soldiers. These poems bring home what is happening in our world today.
While I was reading these poems I felt the helplessness and sadness of not being able to control what was going on around her. I think this would be a good read for college students.
I don't usually read poetry books but I found this one different from the normal poetry. I have given this book 4 out of 4 stars because it was well written and I was able to understand what the author was trying to say.
