Wilhelm is the King of Voulhire. It is his duty to ensure his subjects are happy and at peace. His people believed in him and he did not want to disappoint them. Meldorath, on the other hand, was the evil yet powerful mage. Everyone was afraid of him. It was a relief to all Voulhire when news of his death reached them. However, the trauma he left behind was still fresh in peoples’ minds. Would they ever get over Meldorath and his magical tricks? Would Wilhelm finally reveal his secret to the people? Voulhire, by Mathew Tysz, is an intriguing tale of a Kingdom trying to thrive and survive against all odds.
The read is the first in its series and I honestly cannot wait for the other editions. As it is, this read is not able to stand on its own which is clear from the cliff-hanger at the end. What I enjoyed most was the character of Galen. He was easily awed by every little thing he saw. It was exciting to watch him move to a new town and start a new life. Generally, all the characters were well developed, which is exceptional and shows the hard work that went into writing this tale.
However, there are a couple of things I did not like. One was the character of Maido. I disliked his passiveness to the trouble of the Voulhire people despite the fact that he was in charge of ensuring their safety and security. But then again where is the fun in having everyone act nice. Another thing I noticed away from the characters was misspelt words. This was evident on two separate occasions. Luckily they were very minimal and did not deter me from wanting and reading more of the author’s excellent work.
With all things considered, I award the read 4 out of 4 stars. The story flowed well. Also the errors I noticed were minimal; a clear indication the read was professionally edited. The author is able to hold your attention from beginning to end. Even after finishing you crave more of this tale.
I feel that it is written for a fairly selective audience rather than the general populace, in this case, lovers of sci-fi fantasy novels. Also, the read was quite short and would be perfect for readers looking for a weekend read. Those put off by curse words should know there are a couple in the book. I did not believe how fast this tome came to an end, but I look forward to reading more of the authors work.
