We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies, by Matthew Tysz. In the first chapter, it's about the land of princes, which Emperor of Lullabies lived. The Emperor of Lullabies is a wise and wicked ruler of a vast and powerful nation. He had four sons, and he was afraid that his sons would make a secret plan and commit a wrongful act one day that took his Kingdom. The Emperor decided to send each of his sons to a different island. Within two years, his sons were locked in civil war, using the human natives of these islands and the war dragged, like fingernails cracking in the dirt, for years as their soldiers. In the Lands of the Princes, it was death by the sword, or a slow starvation.
Galen Bray, one of the main characters in this tale lived in the Land of Princes. He was eight years old when the war of the princes began. He's a refugee, but one day, opportunity came, And he grabbed this opportunity to depart from a war-torn place. He found out that he has inherited land in the country called Voulhire. When Gallen is disembarking in Magnum Caelum, he signs the paperwork to receive the inheritance from his Uncle, which is a house and a forge. On his first night in Voulhire he met Rowan his uncle's executor. Rowan plays a huge role throughout the book. Rowan gave him the sword, which his uncle made for him, as well as his uncle's book and letter. The book is a bunch of notes he kept about forging. And Rowan helps him throughout his journey.
Wilhelm Arcolo, the king of Voulhire, struggles to keep his rule from the power hungry Mianoran Council and taps on his evil, magical General Meldorath; which everyone thinks he is dead but held as prisoner just a few miles away. The king appointed Lord Eldus Alderman to take over the small fishing town of Hillport, the same office Meldorath and Lord Orlin worked their wicked ways. Lord Eldus tried his best to make the Hillport a better place, but unfortunately Riva Rohavi attacked Hillport which caused the death of many people. What will happen to Voulhire now that Riva Rohavi starts attacking?
This book is an action, fantasy, magic, and wizardry. And the content is all about a traditional king ruling, struggle for a throne, brother against brother, treachery in a dangerous world full of dangerous people. As the first book of a series, the story starts out slow but it’s needed to allow the reader to get to know the characters, and what they portray. It’s about halfway through the book I start picking up and almost at the end, I found a conflict of the story. I'm disappointed in the ending of the story in this series. I feel like I hang in the middle of excitement; I crave for more. I’m excited to see where we will go from here in the next series.
When I'm reading this book, I feel like I was in the ancient time. Imagining the clothes, surroundings, architecture, and the nature of living. But one thing that's confusing me is the cover of this book. My mind sets in the ancient time clothing, like wearing a woolen garment draped loosely around the shoulders and down the body, secured with clasps or pins at the shoulder and belt, sash or girdle at the waist. But the cover of the book shows a young man in a hoodie and cargo pants looking out over the city. And there's a few words that I don't understand. I got frustrated to look for the meaning in the dictionary. But then, it helps me to learn a new word. It just gets frustrating when you need to stop reading something you are engrossed in, to look up for the meaning. And also, I like the map in the beginning where I can look for the places where it is located.
I think Matthew Tysz wrote a fantastic fantasy and I really enjoy this story with strong characters, which switch from different perspectives. "We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz, I will give the 3 out of 4 stars rating.
