In Can I Be Frank by Rob Wyatt, we find ourselves following the daily life of a somewhat misfit priest that has been sent from England to Florida to run his first parish. You get a glimpse of how happy England is to send Father Francis away to America when the Monsignor, upon hearing the news of the impending transfer, drops to his knees, throws up his hands and cries, “God Bless America!” Trouble seems to follow Father Francis and moving to America does not change this. It does provide for a fun story though!
When Father Francis arrives at his new parish, he is told to keep a low profile and not make waves. As you can imagine, things transpire in the opposite direction! As you begin to think that the book is just going to be about the humorous situations that the priest finds himself in, a mystery pops up to add a bit of intrigue to the storyline. I thought the characters throughout were developed well and relatable. You come to know the good guys from the bad guys easily enough.
The author, Rob Wyatt, is from England and is currently living in America. This gives him a unique perspective regarding the use of British English versus American English. I enjoyed the words that Father Francis used when talking or thinking, and how they came across to his new American acquaintances. Words such as Kerb (curb), wardrobe (closet), biscuit (cookies) and chemist (pharmacist) reminded us that he was in a strange land even though there were no major language barriers to be overcome. I especially enjoyed the saying ‘telling porkies’ when someone was not being honest!
This is a light read that had me laughing, cringing, rolling my eyes, and wanting to find out what was coming next. Each chapter begins with a quote of scripture that perfectly fits the story ahead – and can often make you laugh at the connection! This book is for anyone that would like a humorous read, especially if you enjoy books with a Catholic flavor to them. You don’t, however, need to be Catholic to enjoy this as it does not lecture you about religion, it just happens to be the setting for the story. If you are easily offended when religion is joked about, you might want to skip this book. There was really nothing that I disliked about this book.
I did find some editing and grammar mistakes scattered throughout. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would not mind reading the next book in the series, but I am not finding that I want to rush out and do so. Because of this, and the minor editing mistakes, I am rating this book a 3 out of 4. This is an enjoyable and fun read but not a spectacular one.
