We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a well-written novel that incorporates several themes. Among them, we have war, magic, and history.
Galen Bray is a refugee as he’s running away from his war-torn home in the Land of the Princes. He’s never known peace since he was born so, when his great uncle seeks him out he’s glad to get away from home. As he boards the ship he just knows he’s headed to Voulhire without knowing what awaits him; he prefers death over staying in his motherland. He arrives in Magnum Caelum a small town in which his uncle lived and traded. His uncle was a great blacksmith and he’s expected to pick his business and continue it. This is despite the inheritance he left behind for him.
King of Voulhire, Wilhelm Arcolo, is trying to run a country that has magicians who could bring him down to his knees at any moment. His focus is on Hillport as he sees potential and, he sends his friend Eldus Alderman to be lord. However, the town is recovering from the terrible experience they had in the hand of their two previous lords, Meldorath and Orlin. Another even bigger threat to its security is Riva Rohavi.
Matthew has authored an imaginative and epic book that will keep you glued as you turn from one page to the other. He easily captures our interest with the precise dialogues, action-filled scenes, and amazing characters. I especially like how illustrated the magic is. The mages are spectacular with some tricks that will blow your mind.
The characters in this book are well developed. No one overshadows the other with each being introduced at the beginning. Also, the author has gone ahead to highlight at the beginning of the chapter the name of the character who’s dominant in that specific chapter. Because of the high number of characters he employs this tactic for easy comprehensibility and aiding with the flow of the story.
There's nothing I didn’t like in this book. The storyline and the flow of the story are okay and everything easily falls into place. This being the first story in the We Are The Voulhire series, there’s so much to be done still and that is a perfect introduction to a catchy and amazing series. The cliffhanger at the end is vague enough to make you look for the second installment. Therefore, I rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars as its error free. I recommend this book to all Science fiction and Fantasy lovers.
