Do you need motivation? Are you in dire need of inspiration? Are you searching for true wisdom? If you answer, yes to any of the aforementioned questions, then Beneath the Muscle: Unleash Your Inner Champion by Lauren Powers is the book for you. Sit back, relax and enjoy your questions being answered in a lovely way by this passionate writer.

Lauren is a ten time world bodybuilding champion. She writes about her life experiences from her humble beginnings to until she became a celebrated female bodybuilder. She takes us through her ups and downs. The author even tells us how she fought drug addiction. Lauren highlights how she gloriously featured on television. She takes us through her skateboarding days and many other odd jobs she took along the way. The author tells of how dark moments in her life strengthened her to do greater things in life. Without giving any spoilers, let me hasten to say, Beneath the Muscle, is a life changing book full of positivity from the first page to the last.

What I liked most was that the book was written in simple language. I also liked that Lauren wrote about her dark moments in detail and went further to highlight practical ways of “getting out of the mud” in a casual way. The idea of the importance of support given by family and friends also made the book likable. What I did not like in the book was that the author promoted individualism as opposed to cooperative team players. She seemed to glorify individual sport which does not promote teambuilding skills.

The book has seventeen short chapters, making it a pleasure to read. There are some colourful pictures of the author dotted in nearly every chapter –a clever way of adding visual impact to the story. In the kindle version that I read, there is a link to a workbook at the end of each chapter where the reader can download material and do exercises on the website. There is a quote at the beginning of every chapter to support the title and contents of the chapter in question. This trick made reading the book enjoyable.

This book appeals mostly to those who are into sport- they will learn of ways to improve their performance. I also recommend the book to drug addicts as they will learn of ways to fight addiction. Those who have given up on life will pick up some morsels since they will learn how to stay positive and fight life battles. In fact, I don’t see anyone whom this book does not appeal to as everyone at one point in life is faced by his or her dark moments.

Beneath the Muscle: Unleash Your Inner Champion by Lauren Powers is a book written in short chapters which are further subdivided into bite-sized subtopics. There are very few grammatical errors in the book which makes a good read. One such example of an error was the repetition of the phrase “in my” on location 537 in the kindle version that I read. The author wrote with passion and hence the book is full of emotion; making it an intriguing read. Due to the reasons above, I rate the book 4 out of 4 stars for the exhilarating read that it is.
