Dr. Morton E. Tavel's (i)HEALTH TIPS, MYTHS, AND TRICKS , A Physician’s Advice (/i) is a must have for individuals looking to live a healthy yet inexpensive lives. The book is divided into three parts ( health tips, myths and tricks) with a total of sixty-two chapters. Each chapter discussing one of the several foods, believes and treatments covered in the book. Each chapter ended with a 'conclusion' where Tavel subtly or humorously pointed the readers to the best action to take.
As a retired physician that specialised in internal medicine and cardiovascular
diseases, and also a Clinical Professor, the author clearly knew what he was talking about. He cited biological and medical journals, bringing researched and published healthy alternatives to the readers. He didn't just list problems, he advised on practical solutions.
The first part of the book; health tips (chapters 1 to 32) is an eye opener for me, talking about the benefits and risks of consuming some foods like fish, coffee, red wine etc, what quantity is save or harmful and alternative treatments for ailments such as cold, allergies and back pains.
The second part; myths (chapter 33 to 52) tried to allay consumers fear of vaccines conspiracy theories, gelatin in foods, milk pasteurization, radiation of foods, genetically modified foods amongst other mythical beliefs.
In the last part of the book (tricks), I would have thought the author discussed medical hacks because of the title 'tricks'. But he was warning against alternative medicine and it's evils, with his tone being too personal. I enjoyed reading the first two parts of the book and overall, I would rate the book (b) 3 out of 4. The book also has some minor typos.
