I wonder who the better magician is. Is it Author Patrick Borosky who conjures up words and worlds that fascinate; and keep us glued to the book, or the heroes and villains in the story?
On the morning Author Patrick Borosky introduces us to Ato, she had just woke up from a beautiful dream and was rushing to her studio to paint that dream, for our fifteen year old heroine is a gifted painter well admired in the Crimson Kingdom where she lives alone; ever since her parents had left on a trading voyage two years ago and have not returned. Reed, an active and adventurous boy of her age keeps her company and his mother Lyra looks after her as only a mother would. On that fateful day, Reed was taking Ato to explore the Azure Ruins which were in a forest on the outskirts of the Crimson Kingdom. Ato has her first adventure and as she falls through an opening and discovers the real temple that lay under the Azure Ruins. The white marble temple attracts her and as she enters, she found a table with painting material and a slab of marble with an unfinished painting on it. Ato is drawn to complete the painting and releases the dragon Iro from his captivity. Iro was a special dragon who was not bigger than a hawk! He made up for lack of size by a big ego and the power of magic. Ato and Iro become inseparable and Iro appoints himself Ato’s protector. Ato discovers Iro’s ability to breath magic into her paints and that is how both Artist and sidekick venture into the Kingdom of Myr and an adventure of a lifetime. From the happy Bazaar, Ato and Iro go towards the great dark Castle and come face to face with the Scarred that are beast like creatures that are terrorizing the Kingdom. Ato is almost killed by one but is saved by Ferrin the Iron Knight. Ato and Iro flee to the Crimson Kingdom, but are drawn back to Myr. Their next visit takes them to the village of Ren where a beautiful young witch lives; unknown to the villagers who have accepted her as one of their own, until one day she is forced to blow her cover by causing a Scarred to be burned by her magic fire to save a little girl! Her magic leads our heroes to her as well as the Iron knight who is charged by the archduke Alexander Grand, who governed in the name of the king to find the witch and kill her as all thought that a witch was responsible for the creation of the Scarred. Ato finds Violet the witch and then Ferrin the Iron Knight walks in on them and a fight to the death ensues between the witch and the Iron Knight. It was stopped by Ato when she uses her art and Iro his magic to recreate the field of roses that was burnt during the fight. This stops both combatants as the magic they saw made them apprehensive of the magical power of Ato. Friendship reigns amongst all and Ato decides that she must go the castle of Myr to meet the king and get to the bottom of who is creating the Scarred. Ferrin takes them to his home and Ato uses an innovative way to fly with Iro to the top of the castle where she meets the King who turns out to be a young boy and takes him back to the house of the Iron Knight. The events of the story accelerate as Ato finds out who has been creating the Scarred and discovers a plot to kill the king. The conspirators force Ato to flee with the Iron knight, the King and Violet the witch to her the Crimson kingdom through her art and Iro’s magic. But Ato resolves to go back and get rid of the conspirators and save the people of the Kingdom of Myr from the Scarred and those who control them. To this purpose she concocts a master plan and with the help of her friends returns to an epic battle against the Scarred and the evil man who was creating them.
An environmental chemist by profession, Patrick Borosky superbly succeeds in giving his story two major themes: The power of The Art to bring Good and Peace to the lives of those who embrace it such as when Ato paints the field of roses in front of Violets shack and with Iro’s magic brings it back to life, thus saving Ferrin and Violet from killing each other. The second theme is the eternal fight between Evil and Good, Darkness and Light as indicated many times through the story. The Iron Knight is shown with a halo of light around him keeping the darkness of the castle at bay. The light that always shone whenever Ato and Iro went into a painting or when they escaped from those who were chasing them.
The World of Ato is a great first story for Author Patrick Borosky who uses magic and Chivalry to emphasis the eternal battle between Good and Evil, and its non ending nature as we see the reincarnation of the evil man in the Crimson Kingdom and his luring Reed to follow him.
I recommend this book to readers of all ages who have not lost the look of wonderment of children.
The World of Ato deserves 4 stars out of 4 stars.
