This is a review of the novel Heartaches 2 by H.M. Irwing. In this book, the protagonist is a woman named Anna who is in love with a member of the armed forces. His past posed a threat to their relationship but when they thought the worst was over, family ties threatened to be an even bigger problem.
I rate this novel 2 out of 4. There are several things that made this novel enjoyable. All characters were given vivid descriptions so their appearances and personalities were easy to picture and imagine. Another positive was that the plot of the story was original and plot twists were unexpected which made the book a very good read. The novel also ended with a cliffhanger that was truly suspenseful and left me wanting to know what happened next. I will mention, finally, that there were several explicit descriptions of sex which I believe will appeal to many readers of this book, although I felt that there were a few too many.
Heartaches 2 did not receive more stars in my review because it had some deficiencies. The prologue almost made me put the book down because, although the author tried to be suspenseful, the chapter wound up being confusing and irritating. Chapter one was also irritating because it contained too much narration for my taste and descriptions of the main characters kept centering on their eyes for some reason. The book also contained several errors in spelling and grammar and many F words which dampened my reading experience each time I encountered them.
I must also mention that the book has a homosexual male character who the author seemed determined to have fall in love because the manner of him finding love was contrived. This character was also involved in a totally unnecessary sex scene. I get the need for a diverse and inclusive character pool but the character development should not feel forced.
I would recommend Heartaches 2 to adults who are fans of romance, especially if they prefer to have it mixed with some mystery. I extend caution to those who do not appreciate depictions of sex as there were at least eight such depictions in the novel, including one involving two males. I also caution persons who try to avoid explicit language as there were at least 63 F words. Please keep this book away from children for the above reasons.
