I also love the idea of electroportation. But I had more trouble with Alex's personality. I guess being a teenager was his excuse, but not when you have the power to do so much good.

You're right, it isn't an excuse. I had some sympathy for him but only up to a point. Thanks for commenting.

I recently read and reviewed this one too and had almost an entirely different response. I thought Alex was a self-absorbed, arrogant jerk who used women and showed no real remorse for his actions. Remorse would inspire a change of ways. HIs charitable giving springs from a twinge of guilt, but ultimately has no real meaning, since he keeps much more money to support his own life of excess. Can you imagine what would happen if someone found out those charities were accepting funds that came from a terrorist organization? It wouldn't be pretty. I liked the sci-fi premise, but could not recommend a book with such an unsympathetic hero. But then, it's good to read reviews from differing perspectives.

Alex was definitely self-absorbed and the writer definitely wrote the woman to be props. I tried to give this book the benefit of the doubt. I am also currently reading the second book to see if he grows as a character. When I wrote my review, I tried to keep in mind that even though Alex was an orphan, he was quite sheltered. And growing up as poor as he did money, of course, would hold major sway over him. I do feel that the charities were a way to justify his spending but I hope he grows out of it. Different people have different perspectives but isn't that the magic of writing, how two people can read the same thing but take it up completely differently.
But don't worry, if his behaviour hasn't cleared up by the second book, I will be moving over to your side of the fence. :tiphat:
