This may be a bit left-field but have you thought about sharing myths and legends with him? These could be Greek, Nordic, Native American or any of your choice. One story could just about equal one chapter, and I think it could be an interesting and thought/conversation provoking experience.

Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, Narnia, etc., you should be able to tell where I'm going with this.
Mainstream fiction books/series like these cater to basically everybody. I don't really know any books about soccer or science but Man in the High Castle has a very good reputation.

I would recommend Goosebumps by RL Stine. The book is Young enough for him and intriguing enough for an adult to read. Also, the magic treehouse is an amazing and popular selection of books.

Try the City of Ember series, or the His Dark Materials trilogy. You could also go with the earlier Harry Potter books.

You could also maybe consider something non-fiction on subjects that interest him - the tales of some lives and discoveries are as exciting as any fiction!

A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket might be a good bet. The writing itself is really entertaining and the story's a little deeper than most stuff for younger kids usually is- not cutting stuff out and watering it down as much, so i liked it a lot when i was around your friend's kid's age
