Do you like gritty books, cozy books, funny books...? There are so many options in this area. If you like a historical I would try PD James, if you like old school I would try Agatha Christie Hercule Poirot. If you like more modern try Tony Hillerman, Patricia Cornwall, or JA Jance. Good luck

If you like old school, you should also try Agatha Christie's Tommy and Tuppence detective series.

A series of detective novels set in Victorian era Canada is the Detective Murdoch series by Maureen Jennings, which are quite interesting and a unique setting being Canadian rather than British.

There is also a tv show based on this. I wonder which cane first, the television show or the book?

The books, as there's a mention of them somewhere in the opening credits. I confess, that's how I first discovered the books haha. The books are actually fairly different. The setting is the same, but I found the characters to behave much differently than they do in the novels.

Hmm, I will have to find some time to check them out then. I enjoy the tv show, at least the first couple of seasons.

If you want an unusual detective fiction and a dark book, read The Rag and Bone Shop by Robert Cormier.
