Portal Fiction?
Common in children's/YA fiction, but not as much for adult.
Presently reading Seanan McGuire's offering to the ranks.
Also, love The Neverending Story, which fits nicely in this subsection.
I'm just really curious about books I may be missing that fit this description?

Grief is just love with no place to go.

FOUND IT!
Magic Kingdom for Sale--Sold! by Terry Brooks.
That's the first in the series. A guy named Ben Holiday purchases a magic kingdom named Landover but finds it has some issues. I remember reading this a long time ago. I think it was pretty good, but it's been a while. It's worth a try anyway.

Most likely because adults (usually) don't dream of falling down the rabbit hole/flying off to neverland/climbing through the wardrobe. Or perhaps they do and just won't admit it, even to themselves.Anirudh Badri wrote:His Dark Materials, by Philip Pullman, feature a portal to travel to other worlds in his multiverse. Still not for adults, and you are right. I cant think of any fantasy for adults that have portals as a major theme. Now I'm curious as well.
I just realized that Peculiar Children fits in this catagory.

I know its not exactly what you've asked for, but I also enjoy portal-type fiction, and this appealed to the same interests as Narnia and Peter Pan did, for me.

I actually have that waiting for me. Maybe I'll have to bump it up the list.Angela Stripes wrote:Black by Ted Dekker is along those lines, except there isn't really a portal. A man falls asleep in this world, and wakes up in another. When he's in one world, he thinks the other is simply a dream world, until he falls asleep the next time...

Also, the series Pendragon by D.J MacHale uses portals. I don't know why I didn't think of it before, but it's one of my favorites. Book one is The Merchant of Death.
