The Fear Street series by RL Stine or anything by Roald Dahl

These books are pretty old so you'd have to hit up Alibris or Abebooks (or maybe a library) but I really recommend The Magic Wood trilogy by Beverly Nichols. Age range: probably 9-10, depending on the child.

"The Tree that Sat Down"
"The Stream that Stood Still"
"The Mountain of Magic"

Although it's a trilogy, these can be read as standalone books as well. Make sure to get the unabridged versions; the edited ones aren't nearly as good :)

The Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer is great for middle grade kids. I actually met the author and he's a super funny guy
