Have you tried Learn to Spin with Anne Field? That was the book I found easiest to understand while I was learning to spin.
Also, The Fleece and Fiber Sourcebook (Carol Ekarius and Deborah Robson) is an exhaustive reference for the properties of various types of wool and other fibers.
