Book recommendations: Indian authors, Hindi or other Indian language books?

Post by R Lefler »

I'm studying Hindi and I want to study other Indian languages in the future. I was wondering if anyone has a favorite Indian author they could share? Maybe one with both Hindi and English versions of their book available so I can study the language and still understand the story? Has anyone found a Hindi/English side by side book they liked? I'm also interested in the same for other Indian languages.

The Palace of by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni is a retelling of the Indian epic Mahabharata. The interesting thing is that, it's told from a women's perspective.

History, religion and feminism all come together in this masterpiece. It's a great introduction to Indian psyche too. Every Indian has an inclination of the stories of this epic.

It's available in both Hindi and English. You will not be regret reading it.

You can read books by Munshi Premchand, Rabindranath Tagore, Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, etc. Both Hindi and English translations of their works are readily available.
