That Movie was a Book First?

Post by BookWild »

Ok, I'm going to admit that my two favorite movies are Jurassic Park and The Princess Bride. I have seen them both at least 40 times. I went to the movie theater 6 times when Jurassic Park first came out.

One thing that really surprised me about both movies was the fact that they were both based on books! Books I would have never chosen to read if I had not seen the movie first.

I loved the book version of Jurassic Park by Michael Crighton. I know the dinosaurs in the movie were altered to look better in the film than they probably did for real, but seeing the movie first helped me visualize the creatures in the book.

I'm sorry to say I never did finish reading The Princess Bride by William Goldman. I just couldn't get into the story as easily as I could in the movie. Maybe one of these days I will pick it back up and finish reading.

Has anyone else been surprised to find out a particular movie was actually a book first? Which one??

For me, that's often the case with action movies, like Die Hard, Rambo, and so on. With drama films, it's very often that they're based on books. But with action movies, you don't really expect that so it ends up being surprising.

I remember walking into Barnes & Noble when I was about five and seeing Harry Potter books on the shelves and being genuinely confused, because Harry Potter was a movie series, not books. Oh, how my world turned upside down that day...

When I was younger, I was shocked to find out that Harry Potter was based on a book. Also, I did not know Gone Girl was a book before watching the movie.

War Horse did that for me. I saw the movie and was walking through the library a few months later and saw it on the shelf. I also had no idea Jurassic Park and Princess Bride were books until after I'd seen the movies. Princess Bride is a good book, but some parts are dry. I almost put it down a few times, but it was worth finishing.

The one that got me was The Count of Monte Cristo, mainly because I was incredibly young when I watched it (my father enjoyed the film) and it was around a time when I read constantly so it never occurred to me that there were movies based on books that I didn't know about.

I was surprised that The Prestige by Christopher Nolan was a book. My brother read it and apparently it is VERY different from the movie. He actually likes the movie better in that case.

They also made War Horse into a play, and it is really fun!

Yes it is! https://www.amazon.com/Prestige-S-F-MAS ... B0056A4YZ6

But be aware that it is super different from the movie, so definitely manage your expectations before reading.
