It usually has to be very bad if I am giving up on a book. I have done it few times with free kindle e-books where sexy romantic story has turned out to be cheap and badly written porn. I never walk out of cinemas and usually I do my research thoroughly beforehand what I am going to see anyway so there is no real possibility for complete surprise. Now if I am watching movie from my Tv options movie shelf, then I probably give it 15-20 minutes. And if it seems a waste of time I will find another one to watch.

I will stop watching a bad movie as soon as it becomes unbearable for me; the time can vary.
Perhaps I am more discerning with my book choices; only Umberto Ecco's Name of the Rose, and two books by Stephen Donaldson are the only ones I haven't finished.

That's why I do proper research into movies I want to see before seeing them.
Same for me. I get mega anxiety if I don't complete a book or movie, or (to a somewhat lesser extreme, but I still think about it) TV series.

If I'm not really liking a book, but I know I will finish it, I give myself reading goals (like 50 pages a day) until it's done. Then reward myself with a book I'd been meaning to read for sometime for my next selection.

Your reward system for books seems quite fascinating. I'm intrigued. Though, I think you should probably try doing about 10 mins research into anything you want to read or watch to avoid the agony/misery one sometimes has to endure. Lol.

For me, if a book or a movie doesn't catch my attention in the first few pages of minutes, it's a no-no for me then.

It depends because sometimes the movie or the book starts out pretty frustrating, but then it gets interesting. But I would say something like 30 pages of a book and more or less 30 minutes of the movie.

A bad book, 5 pages I can't stand a bad book. It's different with movies. I keep watching till the end, hoping it will get interesting at some point.

i usually leave a movie on in the background so i dont care if it sucks as long as it provides entertainment and/or background noise.

for a book id read about 40-100 pages before i drop it :/

I hardly gave up on bad books and movies. I feel it's unjustifiable not watch to their work. But then I realised it would be even worst if I let pass time on justifying someone who even not know me and I barely know them thorough this platform. So in the end I keep the continue movie on a mute and turn the pages like I am grasping them by just watching em. Brutal... I know!!

O am one of those who would torture myself in watching or reading until the end. Even though it sucks, I need to know how it ends. Once I start something, I have to finish it

I don't keep track of how much time or how many pages I've read. I'll discard as soon as I become tired of it. Because of the first impression it provides me, I won't bother reading or viewing it again. Keep in mind that the first impression is the final impression.

Even when I don't like something I usually finish it because I'm curious about the ending, though there are a few instances where it was just too boring and I ended up abandoning it.

Where movies are concerned you can go to Rotten Tomatoes or Internet Movie Database and check the viewer's ratings.

I tend to go to imdB and if the rating is 5 points or below I just give it a pass.

I give a bad book just a chapter or two. Movies, 30 minutes max.
