I'm going to have to go with The Rules of Attraction by Bret Easton Ellis published in 1987. In 2002, Roger Avary wrote and directed the film with the same title, based on the original novel. Ellis pointed out that out of all of his published works adapted to film, this was by far the best rendition. I agree with Ellis, and I'm taking it a step farther by saying it was one of the best film adaptation of a book to a movie that I've seen.

One of my favourite book to movie adaptations is Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky because it is an amazing book and the author both wrote the screenplay and directed it! Seriously who better to know how to turn a book into a movie properly than the author himself?

My boring answer: Lord of the Rings. It was thought "not filmable" and see what Peter Jackson achieved! It has been a while as well and the movies still hold up!

I guess, a lot of movies we like are based on books and we don't even know it.

I know its not a movie but Hulu's "The Handmaid's Tale" struck the balance between inevitable rewrites/add in's for the sake of Hollywood and staying as true to the source material as possible very well. It felt that the only thing changed were the things added to make it, well viable for being a series of any length or having side characters be interesting.

Either that or the movie adaptation of "James and the Giant Peach". That's just really good.

I enjoyed The Help. I thought the movie was just as good as the book.

Lord of the Rings, hands down! They are my favorite films and favorite books, so I may be a bit biased.

that's a good question. in my opinion I think that the harry potter series, twilight saga and fifty shades books where really good in movie adaption. the adventure, romance , suspense and the emotion. it was really involved in the adaptions.

I will say pride and prejudice is the best adaptation of a book to a movie.

Very interesting question indeed. To be honest i have watched many of my favourite books later adapted for the big screen and so far i don't approve of any of them. Gone with the wind my all time favourite book but when it came to movie adaptation i felt many lapse in it. No doubt actors were great but the movie was unable to do justice to the novel in terms of picturisation. Many of my personal dialogues and scenes from novel seemed either missing or not properly presented. So afterwards i avoid going for movie adaptation of the books i have read.

The Martian is up there for me, I loved all the scientific information that was in the book, it's so much better to comprehend and put into picture than watching it, surprisingly

The Great Gatsby was definitely the best adaptation. It was an okay book, it was a fantastic movie. One of the few times I will say the movie was much better than the book!
