Tea after meals helps or hurts digestion?

Post by SparklesonPages »

Okay so I’m obsessed with tea. Most reports say that a cup of tea after meals can help with digestion. I have recently read that it may hinder proper digestion?
What do you think ?

I think it depends on one's digestive system. Like the saying "one man food is another man poison" Eat what is good for your health. If you enjoy a cup of tea after a meal and you feel good about it, continue then.

Isn't that the truth. Do what you love eh?

It hurts digestion process because tea leaves are acidic and will interfere in your digestion....Moreover, it will also interfere in iron absorption....better not to take tea immediately after meals...give a gap of 2 hrs and then take tea

I guess good hot green tea helps with the digestion, I often have a cup after having a meal.

Ah yes, I've heard that it hinders iron absorption. That's an excellent point!

I suppose it depends on the tea. Great point Tanya, green tea may offer a better alternative for tea lovers such as myself.

There are many varieties of herbs that are used to make tea. It is wise to conduct a proper research on them prior to ingestion.

I think it depends on the tea, but I usually have my dose of tea in the mornings, and it helps my energy level through the whole day.

Hot water has been proven to help the digestion, so hot tea should also since it's mostly hot water.

I had an unknown digestive issue for three weeks this past winter where I either I couldn't keep what I ate down, or I would get severe cramps shortly after eating (doctor said it wasn't the flu but further tests didn't show what else it could be either). Anyway I started drinking fennel tea after trying to eat, and this did help a bit, especially with the nausea. So I stand by the proper teas being a cure-all.

It really does depend on the type of tea. Peppermint tea after a meal can be very relaxing and soothing. A cup of tea before eating can help with dieting. Fennel or licorice tea increases mucus production, relaxs muscles, and helps with acid stomach and irritable bowels. I think there may be a few books about herbal medicine that could shed some light on your question.

Glad you found the tea helped you Allie. As a Brit, I love tea though I do not drink as much as in the past. I do enjoy a cup of tea before or after a meal. I am started to grow herbs now so I am looking forward to making mint tea.

I also love drinking tea after meal and I always drink green tea. So far it doesn't give any bad effects in my digestion.

When I'm feeling bloated after a meal (after eating too much rich food or just too much, lol) I drink peppermint tea. It helps greatly.
I rarely drink black tea any more. My gut feels weird afterwards. I stick to rooibos and herbal teas mostly.
That fennel tea sounds interesting. Never seen it being sold anywhere. Do you make your own?
