American Foods

Post by CommMayo »

Since this seems to be a very international group, I was wondering what people think qualifies as American food. For fun, include your country of origin.

I'm an American from Maryland. I think of corn as being a very American food.

American from MD too.......... I'll go for more local: St. Mary's County Stuffed Ham defines food in southern MD.

Oh my gawd I love stuffed ham! I used to live in Park Hall...hard to get more "County" than that! I managed to get it in a restaurant up by Annapolis recently.

I have to admit though, blue crabs with Old Bay and fresh raw oysters are pretty darn Maryland. Wash it all down with a Natty Boh, hon. Or a 10oz Bud for you southern Maryanders.

I'm an American from Ohio and currently live in Kentucky. I think fried chicken, hotdogs, and corndogs are the epitome of American foods.

American from NY but currently living in VA.
They might have pizza elsewhere but there is nothing like a NY pizza.

On another note: I think those mystery jello salad/dessert-things are pretty American. Anything in suspended jewel toned jello, I've seen fruit, veggies and meat. That dish has no boundaries.

Edit: Grilled Cheese! Especially if the bread has been buttered and then put on the griddle. With a milkshake (any flavor). Gotta love late night Diner staples.

Ugggg, my dad LOVED jello salad. He would make this abomination called Sunrise Salad. I think it was lemon jello and had shredded carrots in it. It was so gross visually I never even tried it.

You reminded me of a story with the Sunrise Salad jello, I hope you don't mind if I share it.

I visited a friend in Utah for skiing and we stopped by to visit some of his extended family. They had all kinds of jello things, I mean, he warned me but to see it was something else. It was like a cook-off convention for jello abominations. Among all the variations of suspended foods, there was a Chicken Soup Jello...I have not been able to eat jello since.

That is too funny and reminds me of my grandmother's tomato aspic. Just imagine turning V8 or tomato soup into jello. Every Christmas she would make a huge mold of it and no one would ever take more than what was required to be polite. I'm going to blame aspic on the British...it just seems like something they would come up with...

I'm an American from NY recently moved to NC.
I will say I will always love a New York Pretzel and NY Pizza I enjoy more then the pizza I ate in Italy. (I still don't understand the knife and fork concept of eating certain food.)

In North Carolina we have amazing sweet tea, Virginia Ham and some interesting moonshine.

In Japan, you can get corn dogs fresh from most convenience stores, and they're delicious. They call them American Dogs, though, so I think most of the world can agree that corn dogs are pretty American

Before visiting America, I would have said hamburgers, hot dogs and KFC (sorry, so unimaginative).

After visiting and living there a few years, I would add biscuits and gravy. And grits. (Loved those biscuits mmm)

(Sri Lankan born Australian here).

Still laughing at CommMayo's dad's abomination of a salad.
