Favorite foodie novels

Post by e-tasana-williams »

Hi all,

First, I'd like to say thank you to gali for creating these new forums. Food and books...what could be a better marriage than that? :P

Second, I'd like to ask everyone what is your favorite foodie novel? When I say foodie novel, think...

Chocolat
Like Water For Chocolate
Angelina's Bachelors

Any work of fiction that centers around food, really. Those that include actual recipes worked into the story are even better. Soooo...what are your favorites, and why?

Oops! I forgot to include my own favorite...I'd have to say Chocolat. The magical realism of the story reminded me of Isabel Allende's writing, and the descriptions of international chocolate that were included were very interesting to read about. The characters of the small provincial French town were believable and the courage exhibited by the heroine was inspiring. This was one I did not want to end.

My favourite foodie novel is Meet Me at the Cupcake Cafe by Jenny Colgan. I love this book because it's so cute, it talks about the struggles the protagonist faces of not following her dream and one day she finally chases it. The book is filled with so many dessert recipes and I am excited to make some, my mouth is just watering from thinking about it. Plus it's a cute love story so this book is super super sweet :D

My favorite foodie novel is "The Kitchen Daughter" by Jael McHenry.

My favorites are Chocolat and Julie and Julia. The first made me fall in love (again) with love and the second helped me reclaim my passion for cooking.

Chocolat and Like Water for Chocolate are both great books! I watched the movie for Chocolat before reading the book, and while still perfectly charming, I wish I had done it the other way around. Like Water for Chocolate, though, is one of those books that really sticks with me. The magical realism is so strange yet so perfect. I love it's cozy, traditional homelife feel (in part due to the recipes at the beginning of each chapter and revolving around food) while the craziness seems to be perfectly normal.

Julie and Julia is fantastic. The book made me want to run to the local Fresh Market and become a French master chef in my own kitchen.

I'm beginning to wish I hadn't given away my copy of Julie and Julia--I held onto it for so long without reading it that I finally gave up! But I really enjoyed the movie, so I think I should probably give the book a shot.

Apparently I need to search out more foodie books, because I don't really have a favorite to share.

Ah! This is a great topic! I haven't read any of the books listed above but I think I am going to start! I have recently discovered a love for cooking and as I have always been an avid reader I would love to find some novels that involve the love of cooking! Thanks for the suggestions all!

Definitely Chocolat! Also, it's one of the titles that I like both the book and the movie. Julie and Julia is on my list of books to read some day.
