Do you become one with the protagonist in a story?

Post by Alice Thokchom »

While reading a story, I sometimes become one with the protagonist. I am totally absorbed and carried away by the story. Does it ever happen to you?
A joke is to entertain people. If it fails to do so, it's something else!

I think I'm in the minority because I don't really do that! I usually just find myself -really- invested in their journey if the book is good. I can relate to protagonists but I've rarely find myself "becoming" them. I still get absorbed into their story, through!

Have you ever read a book so good you really don't want to finish it because you aren't ready for it to end? I call that a book hangover, because I'm still caught up in that book!

Yes, sometimes. And, even after I finish reading I will keep thinking, replaying the scenes, for about 3 days.

I can sometimes really relate with a character, and I've also experienced the 'book hangover' many times!

Yes! That feeling when you want finish the book but you don't want it to end! It's such a complicated feeling. I've actually stopped reading something a few chapters before it ends and started rereading from the start because I don't want to finish the story yet.

Me, too. I replay some scenes over and over in my head and don't want to start another book until I'm over my "hangover".

Almost always. Especially for bks with alluring writing and written in first person POV.

I start to care about the characters and what happens to them, Ned Stark's death took some time to get over. I also become equally frustrated by choices the character makes that I find ridiculous or keeping them from attaining their goal.

This happens to me so often! I get pulled into the characters and story and have a bit of trouble separating after reading for awhile.

I feel like this mostly when reading a good book. If the protagonist have some habits like me then this feeling is very strong.

This happens to me rarely if ever. I experienced something similar only in my childhood when I read the Biography of a Silver Fox by Ernest Thompson Seton. It described how Domino the Silver Fox (who was the main character) was fleeing from hunters over the sharp rocks, and his paws were covered with blood. I remember me wishing the fox so much to escape from the hunters, as if I were that fox myself.
