What Trope Do You Hate The Most?

Post by Mitsu-Senpai »

Personally I can't stand the following:

Insta-love
The Love Triangle/Square
The Mary/Gary Sue
The Chosen One

If a book has all four? *shudders*

Also, if you want, give examples of books or series' that include the tropes you dislike so that others with similar tastes can avoid them. My least favorite tropes, for example, can all be found in series like The House of Night by P.C. & Kristin Cast and the main series and spin-offs of the Celestra series by Addison Moore. :) I have read all the current books in each series since I try not to leave a series unfinished but I hate them both now even though I, for some reason, loved them as a teen. lol

Insta-Love is probably the worst! UGH!

I also get very tired of the old cop/young cop haters-turn-buddy pair.

I agree with all of the above, except Femme Fatale. I'm genuinely interested to know why you feel that way, KCWolf, because I've never considered it to be an annoying trope. I thought it was empowering, but I'd definitely love to hear a different perspective on it.

Instant love is probably the one that gets to me the most. I'd prefer the circumstances to be more realistic. When two characters speak once and then are like "I will love them forever!" I tend to start judging that character's judgement skills.

Agreed with insta-love

The obscure prologue (or even worse, two back-to-back obscure prologues with some random quote attached)

The female who cannot exist without her man

It just seems so overdone and predictable to me. Almost as if it's lazy storytelling. Instead of creating a unique character, it seems like "Insert Femme Fatale here." I would be interested in seeing a unique take on the femme fatale, however. For instance, make her the actual hero or combine her traits with other character traits.

I'm right with you on love triangles! I can't stand them. Add to that instantly falling in love at first sight. It's too unrealistic.

I also think prophecies are over done. There needs to be more of a catalyst other than ancient prophecies foretold a character's destiny.

I see what you mean. She can be a little bit of a cardboard cut-out. I think the best use of Femme Fatale I've seen is in Victoria Schwab's Vengeful. After her husband kills her, and she awakens with powers, she seeks out revenge after always being underestimated and bullied by her husband. She uses her charm and good looks to lure the mob men and her husband to their deaths. Her character depth was great, and I understood and felt sorry for her at times, but never enough to forget she was a truly unforgivable character when she killed innocents, too.

I agree with the insta-love books, so annoying. I'm also over the washed up [insert profession here] who goes on a quest for redemption. Especially if the washed up part is caused by drugs or alcohol. I feel like I've read a lot of these (and seen a lot of movies) lately.

One of my least favourite tropes is the one where the guy shuts the girl up by kissing her, and she suddenly forgets her issue and kisses him back. Idk about anyone else, but this would annoy me to death irl.
Actually, pretty much the whole attractive-but-borderline-abusive male love interest annoys me.
