The reality is that it is more about the content of the book and the organization more than the length. You can have a long book that you read in two or fewer days and have another one that is short but takes you ages to complete. The worst part is where there are repetitions all over the book.

No, long books do not put me out of reading, but slow books can. I have read many slow books that were both long and short.

I didn't want this to be true but yes, I do get put off by long books. :shhh:
It's just that it's a huge committment as I try really hard not to DNF books and so I always read it through even if I don't like it.

StephenKingman wrote: 01 May 2011, 15:03 How many people here are put off by the thought of reading long books (500+ pages)? Most modern books out there are usually in the 300-500 pages region and i for one have gotten used to this and can manage to read these books in easily digestible chunks but i admit that a book of 600 or 700 pages would take me quite a while to read as i know i wouldnt be able to do it in a week and hence would take my time getting through it..

The exception is if you really are a huge fan of the author-obviously King has released a few 1000+ page books and i soaked these up for the simple reason that i love horror and King but a new genre of book would probably daunt me a bit if it was very long.

Anyone else any thoughts on long books?
It actually depends on the genre of the book. Some could be off-putting.

My partner finds it cool that I like reading thick books or long stories than short ones. It is more satisfying for me if the story is long than having to read a few chapters.

I’m honestly turned off by shorter books xD usually for me, the bigger the better. A big, thick book will catch my eye faster than the cover or title.

Yeah, I must confess long books demotivate me sometimes. Specially if the author fails to keep the book interesting.

The only thing that would put me off, is a boring book.

Long books, as long as they're interesting, are great.

Very short books are even a little annoying.

Not in the beginning, but I definitely can feel myself put off reading when in the middle of a long book. My trick is to walk away for a day or two and then come back refreshed and waiting more.

Honestly, it doesn't put me off reading, but it means I procrastinate reading it. I love reading long books, but I really need to be focused to get into it.

To be honest, I don't think the number of pages matters that much. Some books have hundreds/ thousands of pages but can be read in one afternoon. Other are very thin, but take months. I think this is somehow related to how time works within the story, just like some moments in our lives seem to take an eternity while others pass as fast as the blink of an eye...
