Sad ends of Books?

Post by Lincolnshirelass »

No, I don't mean ENDINGS, as in of the story, but ENDS as in of the book. Yesterday I was unfortunate enough to fall over in town (a faulty paving slab). Don't worry, no real harm done, a split lip and a sprained wrist, but I'll live. But I was carrying a couple of books and they got completely drenched with the bottle of wine that broke - (NB, yes I do drink but was, I assure you, stone-cold sober at the time!!). The lady who wonderfully came to my rescue said I would have to throw them away, and, sadly, I agreed. But oh, I hate the destruction of a book! Anyone else lost books in unfortunate circumstances?

Destruction! what an unpleasant feeling you bring, things that takes years of effort to build gets annihilated in seconds, funny to say, i lost the top shelve of my book collection to a family of book eating sharp edged teeth rat, now i get to reed my books without a cover, that's quite annoying! .

I was given a large number of excellent books last year by a very dear friend who was moving to Paris. There was among them an especially large, expensive, and wonderful book of English literature. Every hundred pages or so it was defaced with feminist complaints over an entire page with ball point pen by some previous owner of the book with particular emphasis relating to a professor. (Tom or his wife would NEVER have done this.) One could still read the text but it is very distracting. I can think of more productive ways to protest without destroying a thing of beauty and source of pleasure for others who are in no way associated with one's complaint.

Oh, I'm so sorry!!! I agree with you; it is so sad. I used to work at a museum and the old books that were seriously too moldy to fix, they had been throwing away before I started working there. I started taking them home instead and still haven't figured out how to help them. I just couldn't see them thrown away!

That is an unfortunate accident! I agree, I would be distraught if I had to throw a book away that got wet. Knowing me, I would try to air it out and dry it. I honestly can't say I have had any serious mishaps with any of my books, other than lending them to someone and never getting them back. I tend to like my paperback covers to stay in good condition so when they get wrinkled or frayed or wet that tends to bother me. :?

A disaster! No I personally haven't lost any book this way. I would like to make old books better though. In fact, my father and a few of his club members recently started a library. They received huge stacks of old and used books from a good number of people. Some of them are quite moldy and even a bit torn up, but dad did a good job redressing them in spite of not having any professional training in book-binding!

Absolutely! I hate when a book has reached its expiration date, regardless of why it's done. I feel like I've lost something that completes me. I try to keep my books as well-preserved as I possibly can for this reason. That's one good thing about the invention of ebooks. Ebooks don't deteriorate with use like physical hardback and paperback books do. Granted, ebooks aren't as pretty to display as physical books are, though

Yes, I have... I thought it'd be nice to try and read a book in a relaxing bath. Suffice to say, there was no chance of resuscitation.

RIP.

I recently had a pet tear up a book that I had left out. She had torn off almost the whole last two chapters.

I don’t really mind a sad ending, only because there are some books that are better with a sad ending rather than a happy ending.
