I will say little of the plot - it almost doesn't matter - except that it does establish very well the opportunities for developing an extensive saga of empire building involving the forces of light and dark, with plenty of good and evil, battles between men using traditional weapons as well as battles involving various magical and fantastical forces.
The story is well written, engaging, quite compelling - a page turner. Despite a somewhat confusing beginning, the story settled quickly and flowed well, becoming more interesting as it went.
Although this is suitable for young adult readers - there is no swearing, overt sex or gratuitous gruesomeness - Jordan does include hints of sexuality, especially hints of lesbian attraction between the principal female characters, notwithstanding that each refers at times with anticipation their first sexual encounters with men.
3.5 stars out of 5 - I couldn't quite give it a 4.
