Do you read the extra books?

Post by Sarah_Khan »

Sometimes when an author writes a book series they release short stories or books told from another character's point of view that is not necessarily part of the official series.
One example of this is the novel Four: A Divergent Collection which is a set of short stories told from Tobias' perspective, released after the Divergent book series was already finished.

So my question is, in general, do you read these "extra" books?

No, I don't. I just read the series itself and the extra doesn't interest me.

I will read them, but it depends entirely on the series and the author, and sometimes the price.
Thankfully, it's become more popular for authors to release collected short fiction.

You know who I wish would do this? Suzanne Collins. I found the third Hunger Games book really disappointing, but there was this really interesting sentence towards the end about Gale and how he moved to a different district and just got on with his life. I kind of thought that would be an interesting story, how his life was being left behind and seeing the plan he probably had for himself disappear and how he overcame that. That would have been an interesting story about how life never goes quite how you think it will. I guess that's what you get when you read YA in your 30s though  If theyre a good author who can write well, I often find the stories of background characters more interesting, so I'll definitely read them.

That's what I do, it's good to hear considering sometimes I feel that not reading the extra books makes me less of a fan somehow. :P

No I don't. I"m worried it might ruin the book for me afterwards.

It depends on the series. I've enjoyed the extras in the Outlander series.

I do not read the extra books.

However, I recall reading a book by Pamela Aidan called, These Three Remain. It is in the perspective of Mr. Darcy and it took me awhile to figure that out. I never read Pride and Prejudice. Now that I read the storyline in Mr. Darcy's perspective, I think reading Pride and Prejudice would be either simple to understand or weird.

Sometimes the extras are good especially if it's told in a different point of view. ;)

I love when authors offer free short stories. I actually only know of a few who do, most charge for them.

I tend not to. I get caught up in a series and want to stay with its usual MO. Plus I don't tend to read short stories or novellas. Maybe I should start doing so. I could keep up with my reading goals better if I did!

It depends. If I like a character in a book that much I will. Most of the time it change my opinion about that person, but I always like that kind of books. Characters that don't interest me I won't read anything about.

well,I actually never crossed path with this thing. I only read the main series. But I guess it won't be bad to read the extra books.A story has different aspects.I wold like to know the story from other aspects too.
