If I want the book as part of my permanent library, I will chose a hard cover book. If I just want to read it, I'll pick a less expensive, disposable soft cover that I can just put in my purse when I have an appointment and time to kill while waiting to see whomever it is I have the appointment with.

My personal preference is hardcover-- I just love the way they feel more than a paperback. But I do read paperbacks as well and prefer those to ebooks.

I prefer paperbacks. Hardbacks make me think of college textbooks.

I love both, but it feels so nice reading a hardcover and I don't get as scared putting it into my bag as I would with a paperback. Ultimately I have more paperbacks because they're cheaper and I like how worn they look after I read them too many times.

I'm a little on the side of both hard and paperback. Whichever way I start the series, I usually prefer they all stay the same! I'm weird, about my bookshelves sometimes.

Paperbacks all the way, hardbacks are heavy and awkward. However, I do recognise the fact that hardbacks sometimes make great collectors' items.

Paperback for novels because they are easier to hold, especially in one hand. Also dust covers are a pain and always flap about and fall off whilst reading. Hardback for reference books, though, as they are more likely to be used at a desk and need to be more hard wearing if in frequent use.

I actually prefer paperback for most books. Especially those I re-reference. They are easier to tote and more pliable. My favorite collector's books I prefer in hard-back because they keep better.

I much prefer hardcover. They're sturdier and don't get as damaged as paperbacks. However, paperbacks are usually lighter and cheaper than hardcovers. Generally, if I'm extremely invested in the book or a series, and I want to add it to my permanent library, I'll try to buy them in the same format.
