I may try years later if I believe that perhaps I was too young to fully appreciate the story back then. Usually I'll get distracted by other books to go back to an old, unfinished book though.

No, I particularly remember reading one book that if it hadn't been on loan from a roommate I would have thrown straight in the trash. It went for shock value and it succeeded. I will never utter the name of that book or in anyway ever refer or recommend it to ANYONE. So no, I would not unless a life or well-being depended on it ever read that book again.

If I read a book and hated it, I would not be reading it a second time. Or a third.

I know I've done this at least once or twice for a bookclub. Even If hated the book the first time I read it, I would reread it so everything I hate about it is fresh in my mind for the group discussion.

Yes. I actually saved a few books I hated reading during my undergrad in college to try reading again later in my thirties. I do find some books are easier to go back to after a few years have passed.

There were a few books I hated in high school, but I always read them because it made me feel incomplete and lazy if I didn't do my homework. In my free time, nothing could make me read something I hated.

It is interesting to see other's comments on this subject. I would never be able to reread a book that I didn't like. There are too many other wonderful books waiting to be read.

What's funny is I was just thinking about this before I logged in. When i was young (12) I had to read "The Turn of the Screw" by Henry James for a class and I hated it. My classmates thought I was crazy because they loved it; it was the shortest book we were assigned! I really couldn't stand it though. Enough time has passed that I've considered trying it again. Maybe I wasn't mature enough to appreciate it?

Yes, I believe that even if I hated a book at one point in my life I should try reading it a few months maybe years later to see if I like it and my taste in literature has changed.

It would probably depend on why I hated it or when I first read it. As a kid and early teen, I absolutely hated everything that was assigned reading to me in school, so I'd consider revisiting those. However, if it was a recent distaste, then I'd rather not because life is too short!

I will give a book a second chance to see if I have grown as a reader, but usually I can't get through it a second time either. I think a third chance would be too much though. :)

If someone highly recommended a book I initially disliked, I would definitely give it another chance and re-read it.

I don't know that I could re-read a book that I hated. To me, reading is an escape or a journey to another world. If I didn't enjoy the first "trip" for a valid reason, then I don't see myself going down that road again.

Maybe. If people deserved second chances, so should books.

I don't think that I would re-read a book that I hate because there are plenty of interesting books on my plate.
