Do You Remove Book Jackets?

Post by Jolyon Trevelyan »

On Hardcover books there is always ( at least very often ) a book jacket or cover what ever you call it. So i wonder do you remove this and throw it away or do you keep it on the book ?

Personally i remove it and throw it away.
A mistake is simply another way of doing things

*gasp* :eusa-naughty:
Well, I never throw them away, but if I am reading a hardcover and the jacket is annoying then I will remove it and read it without the cover. I keep the cover on while the book is on the shelf, but I would never throw them away because usually the cover is too pretty to.

I usually remove the jacket while I'm actively reading the book. Once I'm done, the jacket goes back on. I'm too much of a nitpicker to throw the jacket away.

I'm the same as op. I throw those jackets away immediately. I just can't stand having it slipping around while I am trying to read. It drives me crazy.

I always keep the jacket. For some reason it never seems to bother me.

Agreed! I don't like for it to be on my shelf without a cover.

I've never really had a problem with them, but I find myself reading more paperback mystery novels these days than anything else so...

You can count me as the third!

I take it off to actively read, mainly so I don't tear it, but it gets put somewhere safe and is back on the book when I'm done!

I realize that a cover does not necessarily add to the value of a book, but it was part of the purchase and displays the book on your shelf as it was when you first got it. Can you imagine, as ridiculous as it sounds, how much less a first edition of, say, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone would be to a collector 30 years from now if the cover was missing?

A little, true-life story:

Some years ago I gave my niece (a grown woman) a Raggedy Ann doll as a conversation piece house warming present. The doll was in mint condition as was the original corrugated box in which it was sold which was stuffed with ... are you ready for this .... STRAW. That's how old it was. It was a mint condition collector's item. To my utter horror I learned several years later that she had thrown the box and straw away thus diminishing the value of the doll by about 50%.

Now I am not naive enough to think that the average purchased book may be a first edition or a book of value but I have always considered the cover as part of the book. I have even taken the time to repair them when they begin to fall apart.
