I always want to say Goodnight Moon was the first book I read as a child because my parents used to read it to me at bedtime. But, I would like to count my first chapter books as well because those are just as important. I was a big fan of Junie B. Jones, Thoroughbred, and The Magic Tree House series. To this day, it seems all I read are books that are in a series. :)

I don't remember who wrote it (it was over 40-years ago) but it was called Nightmare and it was basically about a horse who visited children in their dreams - not scary at all, more along the lines of teaching small kids to cope with bad dreams.

The first book I remember reading all by myself was My Father's Dragonby Ruth Gannett. I think it is now actually a trilogy, although I don't remember reading the second two. My first grade teacher, Ms. Batten recommended it to me. The book is about a boy (the narrator's father) who longs for companionship and adventure, and finds himself in the jungle, tasked with saving a dragon from the animals. I remember it being an exciting, action packed book for a seven year old to be reading and I won't spoil the ending but I finished the book in tears.

I read many books going through grade school, but one that sticks out in my mind most is a very simple picture book called "Don't Worry Be Happy." :) It's pretty obscure and I have no idea where my parents found it, but the simple plot is about a big yellow smiley face finding a friend who is the standard big yellow frown face. They meet and the happy face teaches sad face to be happy again by not worrying so much. *(Think 70s Icon). I have a picture of me holding that book with the T-Shirt that went along with it. I like the think it had an impact on my worldview as an adult. Really wish I could remember the author's name. I even looked on Amazon and couldn't find it.

I first thought about goosebumps (which I devoured as a kid) but then can remember attacking the "Berenstein Bears" series in Kindergarten. I loved those bears too!

I thought it was the John and Betty series we had in primary school in early 60s; but now looking at other posts, I'm reminded of what my mother read us before school. Amazing in itself.

I think it may have been The Magic Faraway Tree; though Tom and the Water Babies was definitely there too, could have been first.
Interesting question!

I think the first book I read as a child was snow white and the seven dwarfs. It led to me to other fantasy books like sleeping beauty, cinderella, beauty and the beast, Jack and the beanstalk , and hamsel and gretel. I enjoyed these books as a child
