I hated reading all the books we had to read for school. They were not right for my age, not the genres that interested me and had dull characters. And I loved books since the age of 7. The funny thing is, this was back in Hungary when I was in primary. Now I'm finishing high school in New Zealand and get to pick my favourite books for required reading. I love this schoolsystem.

I hated reading for school but I do remember reading a few books that I thought were going to be boring and they were really interesting.

I used to just read the whole book, and then flip through the class required portion as a refresher for the quizzes. That may make it easier for you too.

I think for myself it was very hit or miss. Some were great and I got into them, while others really felt like homework.

I think if teachers have required books, they should choose books that are more popular or that students would like. I hated reading Shakespeare's works(no offense) because I didn't understand it. The writing was too complicated for me. I ended up going to SparkNotes.
That's quite a big percent that you actually liked! I am impressed!
And Shakespeare is horrendous. The stories themselves are kind of funny if you can get past the language. But the language just sucks.

Schools give the most boring books ever. They should make it fun for children to read.

Agreed. We had reading time during morning assembly and it was boring. They make you read books you just can't bring yourself to read and you have to read that book or be punished. I just can't get into "intellectual reads". I read what I like.

I hated reading in school, probably because I was never interested in the book or because I hated being forced to read a certain book

I agree. I hated reading assigned books in school because I never had any interest in them. I would rather read something that I picked out.

I disliked dissecting a passage of a book in class until all of the joy was completely absent from the process. I enjoy book discussions and analysis, but the fun is ruined for me in a class setting. Most of the time.

I was exactly like you in school.
what I ended up doing was taking a copy home and keeping it and weather it be a week later or a few years later, I almost always ended up enjoying the book. but like you it had to be on my own time, in my own space.
I also hated when the whole class would have to take turns reading chapters out loud. pop corn reading use to really bug me.
you can try talking to your teacher and explain that your having problems and why, you might get lucky and she might give you a little bit of leeway with the dead lines for the chapters.

As much as I love to read, I didn't always like reading assigned books when I was in school. Most of the time, I didn't have anything against the books, I just didn't appreciate something that is supposed to be enjoyable being turned into work!!!

I totally get what you mean. The number reason i read is for some 'me' time, and to just relax and enjoy reading at my OWN pace. So school doesn't really help, there are questions that need to be answered and always a strict time line to follow. This truly sucks out the fun in reading. For me in particular, it sucks because I find myself to be a relatively fast reader, but when it comes to readings for school it takes me forrrreverrr!

The issue with reading textbooks is that many of them are very much tedious. You have to take notes about what you read even when you are clueless about certain parts. Unless its an interesting course like sociology or anthropology...

I hated some and liked others but I think if I went back now and tried to read the same books I might like them more.
