Take out a knife and stab them, of course :) I wouldn't do anything other than be annoyed that they're writing in a book. It is their book, after all. I would just be happy that it's not my book :)

I'd slap the pen out of the person's hand and rush the book to a safe place, caressing it and assuring the poor book that all would be well.

I am afraid that I just don't see books as some sort of sacred object you dare not deface. Back in the ancient times when they were extremely rare and valuable, definitely. But books are common now and are easily replaced.

If someone owns the book, I have no problem with them writing notes or commentary in it. I am not a christian, but my dad was. He had a bible he wrote copious notes in, and I treasure that bible because he has since passed away. This would also be one of those rare exceptions where I can see someone got really upset. If someone wrote in my dad's bible, I would be seriously ticked off because it has sentimental value to me.

However if someone does NOT own the book and they are writing in it, that is lack of respect for someone's property and should be addressed properly depending on the situation. The same way you would address anything else where someone defaced property not theirs that is worth anywhere from $5-$20.

I've always been rather proud of the fact that the oldest book found with notes scribbled in it was in Ireland. I've always made notes in books and underlined, and later highlighted, significant passages. When I was working the organization bought management books to be passed around, read, and discussed. I always bought my own copy so I'd be free to scribble and highlight. I discovered people who hated to read were fighting to borrow my copy because all they had to read was what was highlighted.

I feel sorry for people who feel they have a right to control others through nasty looks or taking someone else's property and hitting them with it.

I wouldn't do anything (unless the book he/she is writing in belongs to me, of course!) I would like to think that people wouldn't write in books that don't belong to them, though, so I'd just assume that the book is the property of the person in question and not give it much thought.

I wouldn't do anything since it is none of my business.

I suppose it would depend on whether I knew for certain whose book was being written on. If I saw someone sitting in a library, writing in a library book, I'd probably say somethig to that person. In any other place there's no way of knowing who owns the book and the said writer could well have every right to treat it as they please. Personally, I wouldn't write in any book. I have enough notepads for that.
