I'd smile to myself. I do that with the books I love, too.

If it's their own book it's none of my business. If it's my book, they're dead.

It really depends on why they are writing on it or in it. Obviously, if they are doodling or scribbling that would make me cringe but they could be highlighting, underlining or taking notes. If it’s their book, I don’t see a problem with that.

I actually don't have a problem with this whatsoever (unless of course, it's not their property). I write in my books constantly; it's part of how I love the book and interact with its author. Furthermore, when I buy a book (75% of the time I buy used books), I prefer to find loads of writing or post-its or underlines from previous owners. I want to know what moves people and add to this collective creative conversation with the author. I'm a writer who is moving towards short stories and novels and hope people will love my books enough to underline phrases and write notes. It's not vandalism at all in my opinion, it's love and fulfilling the purpose of why we write and read — to discuss ideas. My library is not full of relics that belong in museums or art galleries, but powerful ideas and voices that I treasure. :)

If the book is their's I actually encourage it because I see it as them truly engaging with the text. I like to take notes while I read because I like to see how my thoughts have changed over the years. If it's not their's, then I give them dirty looks.

If they own the book its not as bad as writing in a library book.
I can understand underlining stuff and writing notes in a self help book or a college book.
But writing in regular books besides a note if you give a book as a gift isn't that cool.

Read it after them because I would be interested in their perspective. I love finding books with writing in the margins.

(I'm assuming it's a storybook, not a notebook!)
If it's their own, I'll ask, maybe in a very 'curious' voice, why they're doing it.
If it's a library book or my own, I will make sure they stop.

I always write in my books! I love underlining quotes or segments I want to remember or take note of, and sometimes I will write in the margins.

It's their book, they can do what they want. But if they were writing in my book, that's another story.

I like to write in books if there is a reason to do it. For instance. if there a part that I think is poignant
I will underline or write in the margin so that I can remember it. I only write in my own books though.

As long as the book isn't mine then I don't mind. I kinda get why some people do that, though. But I just put a piece of paper on pages that I want to remember a line from.

I completely agree. I don't like to write in books, but it is their book. They can do what they want.
