I was walking by the local indie bookstore in Orlando and saw an author reading from his book. The book was a memoir called Dumbfounded and the author is Matt Rothschild. His reading was really funny so I got a copy (I'd never heard of him but he was in the paper). Anyway, if you love Sedaris, you'll love this guy.

Rothschild grew up in ritzy New York City, and definitely pokes fun at his upbringing. His grandmother is a riot. It's like Auntie Mame meets Fiddler on the Roof. I read it in two sittings.

Book #1, ‘If Republicans Had Any Hearts, They'd Be Democrats’, is a direct response to Ann Coulter’s book ‘If Democrats Had Any Brains’. It is part humor and part serious, and is very easy to read. It is very critical of Socialism and Barack Obama, as well as bigotry from Ann Coulter (sometimes I applaud Republicans, but not often).

Book #2, ‘The Spiritual Teachings & Biography of Master Krishna Venta’ is a positive and serious book about humanitarian service, spirituality, and also serves as a resource for the first book. For example, the discussion of my association with Charles Manson (in book 1) references lectures given by MKV (printed in book 2). The books are written at the high school level, and include the following subjects:

1. My step-father and I preached the gospel of our religious cult to Charles Manson in 1968, and we were directly responsible for the insanity that followed. A biography has already been written about my step-father and his life in Alaska, and my own biography is included in these 2 books.

2. I was inside the blast from a double suicide bombing in 10 Dec 1958, when 10 people died. The book also discusses child abuse at the cult. On the other hand, book 2 is very historic and full of photos.

3. Our cult also set off Jimmy Jones on his insane suicide / mass murder mission, and 9 of our cult members died in Guyana, 6 of them children. I explain the connection and the causes.

4. The books discus Socialism and Barack Obama, including extensive documentation of a public housing project of $300,000 homes that are rented out to welfare scammers at $200 a month.

5. The books include documentation of the abuse of Veterans at a faith-based shelter, and at the VA clinics. Hopefully the book will trigger an enormous controversy over this issue.

6. I was working for a company that imported illegal aliens in 2004, and have evidence that they donated money to John McCain. Three company officers are now in prison, busted in 2006.

7. Book #1 also discusses most of the hot topics in the election debates, like foreign policy, education, the environment, health care, technology, and crime. These discussions are short and at a level that high school graduates can understand.

8. The book includes a chapter and drawing that I call the Magic Star of Kemet, but some may call it the Symbol of the Beast - 666. I have been waiting since the mid 1970s to write the book about the cult where I grew up, and now is as good a time as any to publish the story, and the drawing that is totally mine (see the back cover).

I've just picked up a couple of David Foster Wallace books. It's a shame that it took his dying for me to finally listen to my friend and read Infinite Jest and Everything and More. I'll read Oblivion after these two.

I recently finished The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz and Pale Horse Pale Rider by Katherine Anne Porter. Both are worth anyone's time.

I'm a big fan of Augusten Burroughs. I would definitely recommend A Wolf At The Table for any memoir fans.

Also my new novel Skeletons...shameless plug.
