One or two, but not more. Even staying focused on a single one can be hard sometimes, depending on where and when I read, but I wouldn't go for more than two. The only situation where it would be possible for me to read several books at once is if they are not the same genre or, for example, one is a scientific book while other is just a suspense or thriller read.

I have been known to have up to 4 or 5 books going at one time, but they are all different genres. Like self-help, quantum physics and a novel. Once in a while I'll have more than one novel going at a time, but they too will be very different - like a romance and a horror story. I never have any trouble keeping the plots straight. Maybe I'm weird...? :P

I tend to start many books at once, but try and limit myself to no more than three at a time. Sometimes I will be so into a book I will use read that book for awhile. I tend to read a lot of books at once because I like to have different types of book to be able to choose when I feel like reading. I t sometimes result in taking awhile to finish some books. I do this more during the summer than when I am in school because I sometimes will have to read books for school and so I do not have a lot of time to read for pleasure so during the school year I try to limit myself to one or two for pleasure.

I can't read many books at once. I usually read one book a week, considering my hectic school schedule.

I only read one book at a time, that's because I'm not super human and i can only get tiny bits of information in my brain once, i like to fully commit, get into a book, understand and finish it before i can get into another. This helps me to make very clear conclusions about the book and not to get confused with the characters and other incidences

I prefer to concentrate on one book at a time. It can get confusing when I try to read more than one bookk at the same time. I will mix up the plot and may forget details.

I can read up to 3 books at once switching back and forth. Sometimes I will have 2 on my kindle than at least one paperback or hardback book. Sometimes it helps if you get into a stopping point in one story and don't want to go back to it for awhile but still want to read.

For me I always want to be deeply involved, so I will always prefer one book at a time.

Two at the most. I like to give a book a fair amount of attention any more than two and I've found that I'm not nearly as engaged.

I read at least 2 books at a time. An audiobook in the car, a book on my Kindle app, and sometimes a paperback trade book.

I'm usually reading 2 to 3 books at a time. (And have started a few more if I can't decide....).

I read 2-3 books at a time, but they are well separated. I will have 1-2 books that I'm reading by myself (if it's 2 then one will be fiction and another non-fiction, for example) and 1 that I'm reading with my husband. That's how I keep them all sorted out.

I can't read more than one book at a time either...fiction I mean. As the OP said, I get too engrossed in the book I'm reading to be able to switch to another. I get the story confused that way, and I like to be totally in that world while I'm reading it. If I was reading a novel and something non-fiction or educational, then I think I could manage but I rarely read that type of book.

2 is the most I've had on the go at once.
I stop one at a good point though, then read and finish the other, then I might go back to the other. Then I might start and finish another doing the same thing
