I don't usually read self help books. I think probably the only one I've read is "Skinny Chicks Don't Eat Salads" by Christine Avanti. It was a good refresher course on information I already knew, and it had some great recipes in the back.

Ishmael by Daniel Quinn. or Siddhartha translated by Herman Hesse. They're more philosophy than self-help, I'd have to agree with gali about not believing in "self-help" books. but these two books changed the way I see the world for the better, unlike any "self-help" book I've read.

I skimmed a few of them and found them boring. They aren't my cup of tea and I don't think that they are the answer for problems. No offense meant, just my view.

Self-help books usually don't permanently change my behavior. They do give me ideas on how to improve and they do inspire me to be better, but that's about it. I love reading them though.

In answer to your question Fran...i've always been interested in the effects of " food on the body " .....as a student of preventive medicine as my education progressed, i learned that NOT eating ( implemented appropriately ) can be highly beneficial........

not recognized in this country, ( cause there's no " dough " in it ) " fasting " is recognized world wide as a tool to detoxify, re-boot the body, etc...........not to mention the " spiritual " aspect...it truly is a " renewal " of mind, body and spirit...

i've had the greatest /teachers /mentors /Gurus to help me along this path...

Dr Joel Furhman, Dr Andrew Weil, are on PBS regularly discussing the benefits of a healtyh lifestyle incl. " fasting "

Tnanks for your interest...

"Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" I suppose falls under self help, but it is actually a pretty awesome book in terms of aiding the reader in taking stock in things and shifting their behaviors.

"The Richest Man in Babylon" by George Clason is an oldie but a goodie. I gave a copy to each of my children to read when I started paying them allowances and I would highly recommend it as a good place for anyone earning too little to save money by other means.

I have always passed the self help sections in bookstores, but hadn't really thought about picking one out before. It was only quite recently I was at the library, when my hand instinctively reached out for an interesting looking book called The Source, by Ursula James. It did not look like any self help book I have seen before, and in my opinion, in its own way isn't. Ursula James takes you on a journey of finding/rediscovering the power of who you are and how you feel you are meant to be. It is indeed a book of self-realization, meditation that corresponds with the lunar cycle, and enlightenment.
