Which required books did you enjoy reading?

Post by smaudy44 »

We all had to read a set of required fiction books for school at some point of our lives. However, we did not like every single book that was assigned. Which books did you guys enjoy reading for school? If you were the teacher, which books would you require your students to read? My personal favorites are The Great Gatsby, Fahrenheit 451, and The Outsiders (Remember Ponyboy, anyone?)

My favorite required book, even though I had a hard time getting into it when I was younger was the Scarlet Letter.

My favourite required readings were Macbeth and An Inspector Calls. I just love the morbidity and detail in both of them.

I had a lot of teacher's who refused to teach what was required unless they could add in their own books. They usually gave us a choice: we could read only the required books and write papers about them or we could read the required books and others and do creative assignments that forced us to see the connections within the two texts.

Invisible Man-Ralph Ellison

I wish I could have gotten into "Things Fall Apart" but that particular instructor sucked, I'm going to try it again sometime

Th Hobbit!? You got to read The Hobbit in school? My school never did anything that far into fantasy as that, but that was what I was really into at that time. I still am, but my tastes have broadened since then.

One of the books we read that I liked was The Lord of the Flies. It was so dark and intricate. It made me think.

Definitely give it another shot. I read it for a college course and really loved it. The style of writing was simple but poignant. A very intriguing read.

The Outsiders remains one of my favorite books to this day! We also read The Giver that same year, which I loved as well. In high school I really enjoyed A Prayer for Owen Meany, and in college my favorites were Pledged and The Last Shot.

Hamlet and Much Ado About Nothing were definitely my favorite plays that I was required to read. I was particularly fond of Bless Me, Ultima and Les Miserables. Brave New World was good too. I loved Ulysses and Walk Two Moons.
