I hated or didn't care about most of the books that I read in high school. I did really enjoy both Farenheit 451 and The Handmaid's Tale. That's about it though.

The Caucasian Chalk Circle by Bertolt Brecht. I read that book countless times and never had enough.

To Kill a Mockingbird was the first assigned book that I enjoyed, though I think I was too young to fully appreciate it at the time. The Great Gatsby, on the other hand, hit me at exactly the right time in my life and kicked off a love affair with Fitzgerald. <3

I remember in my first year of secondary school my class had to read some book about horses but the other class got to read The Hobbit! I was so jealous I just read the hobbit on my own free time then 😂

We read Jane Eyre in high school, which I really liked. I also remember enjoying the Grapes of Wrath.

I haven't thought about this book for a very long time but in 8th grade, we were assigned The Yearling by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. Most of my classmates moaned and complained about having to read it but I loved it. Of all the books assigned to me during my school years, it's the only one I remember fondly.

In high school I read The Scarlet Letter and really enjoyed it. We also read Night which was incredibly enlightening as well as The Diary of Anne Frank. In college I took a class called Detective Fiction. We read some great books in there including the first book in Lee Child's Jack Reacher series which was the start of my addiction to it. I'm not a huge fan of the classics or Shakespeare which is what we read a lot of. Those are the only ones that really stand out to me.

I think I would have students read all three of the high school books I enjoyed.

I enjoyed reading a good number of my required books. The Outsiders, The Giver, Where the Red Fern Grows, Shabanu, Hoot, Of Mice and Men, The Hobbit, and Jane Eyre, to name a few. That's not to say I haven't had a lot of books that I didn't like reading. I guess it's just half and half for me.
