Yea true, I agree with you very much. So much is lost in translation, sometimes it just like reading entire different book. The original language is always better as far as you speak the language.

I usually just read in English, but I would eventually love to read in multiple languages such as French and German.

I do. But I prefer reading in English in order to improve myself.

English is my first language, so yes! The bulk of my reading is done in my first language. I sometimes wish I have the habit of reading books in the other languages I know (Chinese, Spanish, Malay) but so far it's difficult for me to find books in the genres I like which are written in those languages.

English is my first language. However, I am part German and I know the language pretty well. I haven't read a novel in it though.

I've only been able to read English. But I do hope I could learn the mother tongues of my favorite authors Paulo Coelho (Portuguese) and Milan Kundera (Czech, I'm not sure if he also writes in French though).

My first language is Hungarian and I have lived in Hungary until I was 13, so I used to read a lot in that language. But ever since my family moved to New Zealand I started reading in English and noticed that I prefer to read the original version to the translation. I don't know, I just feel like I won't get the same thing if I don't read what the author has actually written, but the translator's version. But then I do love my first language, so I try to read in it too. There are also exceptions. I just recently read Alice in Wonderland and was surprised at how bad it was in English, so I switched to Hungarian (my favourite Hungarian poet was the translator) and I enjoyed it immensely. I also speak a French okay, but I haven't actually read anything in French yet. I'm aiming for an original version of Victor Hugo, but that won't happen for a long loooong time...

My first language is English, so I read all my books in that language. I have tried some other languages, but it is much more difficult when I do not understand all the words and I hate referring to a dictionary.

Spanish is my first language and I love reading Latin authors. I agree with you some books have politics in them but I have some must reads authors like Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Isabel Allende and Paulo Coehlo. I tried rereading the The Stories of Eva Luna by Isabel Allende in English and it just didn't work for me, Spanish for some reason to me sounds a little more sultry and passionate so it works better when you're reading romance.

For pleasure, I only read in English. However, I stopped learning French after grade 11 but wanted to keep up the skills I learned, so I bought two middle-school reading level books in French so that I could learn some vocabulary and not forget any basic skills.

I wish I could speak enough of a second language so that I could have the options!
