I had to read The Old Man and the Sea in school and absolutely loved it! I now own two copies of the book and am a fan of Hemingway.

Best three books I studied at school were: To Kill a Mocking Bird, Lord of the Flies and Touching the Void. I was surprised I liked Touching the Void as I never really read non-fiction accounts.

I was not much of a reader back then (in high school), sad to say, so anything that I read was simply over my head.

Freshman year of high school I had to read To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, and The Book Thief by Markus Zuzack(can't remember how to spell his last name, sorry if it's wrong.) usually I can't stand a book if I have to read it for school, or by force. But these two books automatically pulled me in and will always have a special place in my heart.

I read East of Eden for the first time in high school and it had such a huge impact on me. It became one of my most favorite books.

Things that I read at school and loved: Measure for Measure, The Wasteland, Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, lots of poetry (Carol Ann Duffy, Thomas Hardy come to mind), Of Mice and Men and much more. But finding it scarily hard to remember...

I was more ambivalent about: Frankenstein, Dracula, Brave New World, and Antony & Cleoptra.

I had to study 'The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man in the Moon Marigolds' and I had to do an assignment on it. Nope, I did not end up liking it.

I actually really liked a lot of the books I studied in school. I chalk it up to my teachers having pretty decent literary tastes. The one book that stuck out for me was Siddhartha by Herman Hesse. Definitely something I wouldn't have read on my own, but really one of the iconic books of my adolescence.

fiorabelle wrote:Although it was a compulsory read I loved "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. I thought Lee beautifully wove together two stories, that of a young girl growing up in the South in the 1930s and a story about prejudice, racial discrimination and of course bravery and standing up for what you believe in. I also agree with you BakerStreetJ, it was exciting going to class each day and analyzing the newest chapters with my classmates. :)
I completely agree. I read To Kill A Mockingbird at school and it really stuck with me. I reread it recently and it is still so powerful and relevant today. A real classic in my opinion, I hope it is still studied in schools.
