Eyebrow-raising book....

Post by Jenn »

As it`s out-of-print, the library is where you`re likely to find "Why Don`t You Have Kids?"~'Living A Full Life Without Parenthood' by Leslie Lafayette. Which is why I`m glad i bought years ago.

Hence the reason why I have TIME to read! :D

Well, for starters, this book certainly covers any questions or comments put to you from society about why you don`t have children. It can be a helpful guide for those that either are infertile, or simply never wanted to raise children.

The writer stresses the difference between 'childless', and 'childfree'. 'Less' meaning you want kids and can`t have them naturally, and 'free' meaning you purposely chose to live your life without them.

I`ve found that the ONE question people ask those that choose a childfree life is "Who will take care of you when you get too old to care for yourself?" Which basically means that people with kids EXPECT their kids to care for them down the line. In my line of work, I know that ain`t always so.

The author also gives her own bio, which I`ve found to be extensive enough for her to be able to write such a book. She had also created 'The Childfree Network', which has had chapters in a number of cities. It`s been a way for 'non-parents' to meet and exchange views, feelings, and support.

Anyway, I hope this has been helpful. :)

It sounds interesting. :)

Would you only recommend the book for people who do not have kids and who are not planning on having kids? Or would you recommend the book to people who do have kids and people who are planning on having kids?

For Scott and Star: I`m so glad you answered. I DO recommend this book for everyone. Parents, non-parents, SINGLE parents, adoptive parents, people who marry and now have step-children, and people whose children are furry and four-legged! :D

I`ve found this book to cover it ALL. The writer has spent a great deal of time talking with people from both sides of the pendulum.

All I suggest is that the book is given a chance. As I mentioned before, it`s out-of-print, so the most it`ll cost you is a trip to your local library.

And what a daunting task THAT is, for a true 'book-o-phile'. LOL!

(sorry---my own silly-made-up word)
