Ideally I find soft jazz or instrumental music is a great environment for reading but I will read anywhere. It’s really just about squeezing reading time in wherever possible.

Depends on what I'm reading for, like if I'm supposed to really concentrate on the text for class I can't listen to new (to my ears) music. Any other occasion, I love reading to music because it's very difficult for me to focus on one thing.

If I need to calm my mind while reading, then I play music in the background.

I never put music on or anything like that. But, whether there's noise or silence in the background, I become engrossed in the story and can't even hear when someone is talking to me. I forget about life as I know it and the only thing I am aware of is the world in the book!

Booklover_CRJ wrote: 23 Feb 2018, 16:57 I can read in any environment. I had to learn to read with noise growing up because when my mom and aunt's got together it was never quiet! Lol so either I learned how to block that out or I didn't read at all. I don't usually read in dead silence but I can and honestly once I'm "in" a book I don't hear anything anyway.
Now that you mention it, I also never read in total silence. I usually put on music for background noise, but now I'm wondering why I don't like silence

I don't mind background noise, such as television, and listening to music sometimes heightens my experience, but I need relative quiet. It's not just that I'm easily distracted, but I feel I owe a good book my complete and undivided attention when reading. So, I tend to mutter a short and snappy "shuddup" at my phone if it sounds a loud alarm for a notification, or at my boyfriend when he talks to himself over making lunch. He talks to himself a lot.

I really like instrumental and/or nature sounds while I read. I don't focus in a vacuum. but I don't focus if there are any lyrics I understand. Cirque du Soleil music has long been great focus music for me.

Classical music at a low volume. You see me reading don't be trying to have a conversation. I'll shush you harder than the hundred-year librarian at your local branch.

I find it really difficult to read with any kind of noise. I prefer absolute quiet in order to assimilate what I'm reading.

I definitely prefer to read in silence. The slightest noise distracts me. That is why I do most of my reading at home.

I have a five-year-old boy, a two-year-old girl, and an Eclectus parrot. There is no such thing as quiet in this house. I can usually read through the chaos, and keep an eye on them all at the same time. It's a gift

I like when it is quiet, however I have three kids and three dogs, so quiet is not in my reality. :) Luckily, I can read if it is quiet, loud, or anything in between!
