Book 79: The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan. This review is totally biased by my enormous affinity with the situation of the protagonists. My mother was also the daughter of a Chinese immigrant from Guangzhou and until a year ago we didn't even know how to write his last name in Chinese ideograms, we are still left with the mystery of the characters for his name. The times are the same and the experiences almost the same. The war and other social conflicts caused many people in these regions to leave their lands and raise their daughters in different places, with different customs, and they became a bit strange to their parents. And it is also true that only by missing is that the daughters begin to reflect on everything they did not know about their origins and seek how to fill this void.
A book that has touched me and made me love my grandfather and my mother and aunts much more. But I admit that for people outside this culture it can be a bit complicated due to the number of customs, some that I didn't even know about, that appear in the story.
Anyway, I'm going to buy it to gift it to my mother. 5/5

I totally agree with your 5/5 rating. I often hear the terms chick-Lit and chick films, but I do not include those terms in my vocabulary. There are only good books (and movies) and bad ones.

The fact that the movie Joy Luck Club was not even NOMINATED for an Academy Award is a crime which screams out to heaven, and my opinion is an opinion that is shared by many. As a result of this I no longer ascribe ANY interest in ANYTHING suggested by those awards.

Book 80: Gender Trouble by Judith Butler. My only complaint, and I think it is due to my Spanish translation, is that the metalanguage used is too hermetic and difficult for the common reader to assimilate. And for the specialist, even more time should be reserved for the understanding of philosophical issues. In contrast, my translation of Kant, which I also read this year, was much clearer and more digestible on first reading (and to say that Kant is better understood than this book is saying a lot).
On the other hand, the important question about the dilemma of gender, interpreted from philosophy, linguistics, psychology and history, gives rise to several questions that affirm Butler's theory about the nullity of this concept and the importance of understanding the construction of gender identity according to the empirical experience of the subject. Hence, the metaphysics of substance is the primary theme of this work. There are other subtopics that caught my attention, such as previous theories denying identity outside of the binary, and how gender is used to exert dominance over the other. Hence, language must respond to a liberation instead of being an oppressive instrument.
Now, post-structuralism is now almost obsolete, so a review of all the work is urgently needed, but as a starting point that leaves grounds for questioning these issues, it seems acceptable to me. 4/5

I finished Wild World by Peter S. Rush and rated it 2/4 stars, so would that then make it 3/5? Not 100% sure.
It was an intriguing, thought-provoking and complex book, but it was drawn out quite a bit and I picked up a lot of errors in the book. Therefore my lower rating.

Book 81: Salem's lot by Stephen King. I like vampire stories well told and this one had all the predictable elements of one, but with a believable plot. So I thoroughly enjoyed it.
The stake in the heart, the garlic, the crosses, the sun, all known elements, but that in this story seem insufficient when you face so many beings of the night.
The story does not decay at any time and forces you to continue reading, it reads very quickly despite the fact that it is a book of more than 500 pages. Of course, it is not scary, it is more than anything suspenseful. In any case, I recommend it to all lovers of the genre. 5/5

Book 82: Carrion Comfort by Dan Simmons. It has been difficult for me to finish this book because I quickly got annoyed with it, although the plot was interesting and even novel.
In this case, I found the story to be very interesting and I didn't feel any plot holes that would let it down, and that's the only reason for my rating.
However, I really hated the narrative and the length of the story. The author's sexist, racist and classist ideas were transferred to the pages at every moment and it was an ordeal to turn the pages without wanting to throw the book away from me. When one of the protagonists admitted that it was even more terrible than physical rape, but that she wanted it to happen again, I was ready to write my review, but I still had half a book to read, so I persevered. The ordeal, furthermore, was endless because the length of more than 900 pages did not correspond to the story it told, which could have been finished very well in about 300 pages.
Phrases like "mental rape" repeated ad nauseam will stay with me forever, and I'll wonder if the one who was being attacked wasn't the reader who was determined to finish this book, the only thing that really scared me about this book, because it wasn't even suspenseful I could classify it as.
Anyway, don't read this long story just for the plot, it's honestly not worth everything you have to endure just for that. 2/5
