I think it depends on your personality or mood, maybe along with need. When I was younger, I generally only read one book at a time, then in my late teens early twenties I started reading different books. Maybe I didn't read them as well - some of it might have been because I had children and so got into the habit of reading their books to them and then reading my own after they went to bed. In college for literature and philosophy, it was pretty much required that I read more than one book at a time. One thing that I think is good about reading more than one book at a time is that it gives the reader processing time - it kind of forces one to slow down and think more which can be good or bad.

I read three, usually. One or two that I am reading to review and one of my choosing. I do try to keep the genres different so as not to be confused with different storylines. I find this works for me, if I need a break from one book I switch to one of the others and visa versa. I usually read about 20 a month total.

I am one who likes to read more than one book usually 2 at a time. I tend to read the book I am more interested in reading at a given time but I like to give myself multiple options in case I change moods. The books differ enough in plot that I never really get confused. I may have to read the chapter before I left off to refresh my memory, but it is not a bother for me.

I tend to read at least two books at the same time.

One horror book and the other a sci fi/fantasy book as long the sci fi/fantasy book isnt too long. But I read Star Wars books which they dont take too long to read through anyway.

a Stephen King novel will take me awhile to get through especially if its a new one.

a long series though will take me the whole year. Stuff like Dune or the Mistborn or Wheel of Time will take a long time

I used to have one book at a time, but that has changed. I usually have multiple books when one of them is a very heavy read (like Return of the King is right now for me) and/or one of them is a different kind of read, one that doesn't have to be read with consistency, like a motivational book or one that wants you to look for it in specific moments (like Dale Carnegie's How To Stop Worrying and Start Living is right now for me).

So, I'm currently in the range of 2-3 books including the two mentioned above. I consider listening to audiobooks as part of this experience too, so they add to the number. I think the maximum number I'd ever reach for simultaneous reading would be 5.

I only read one book at a time, unless it's absolutely boring but I don't want to leave it unfinished. Then I start another book and read the one I don't like few pages at a time.

One time I was reading 5 books at once.
But usually, it is 2-3 books whereas one of them is non-fiction and the other one is fiction. So they don't bother each other.

I generally read 2 to 3 books at a time. They're different genres and fit into my mood at the time. I also keep a book in the car and a kindle with me wherever I go.

Roughly 2 to 3 books, one of them being fiction. The other two vary. They could be both nonfiction or one of them fictional. It just depends on how well I'm vibing with my current reads.
